Session Descriptions

Georgia Afterschool & Youth Development (ASYD) Quality Standards

The Georgia Afterschool & Youth Development Standards is a collaborative project funded and endorsed by several state agencies and offered to all youth development programs across the state as an opportunity to increase program quality. The Standards are grounded in research and best practices and include an easy-to-use self-assessment tool. This session will give participants insight into the Standards and how they could be used to evaluate and increase program quality. Participants will:

  • Understand the ASYD Quality Standards program improvement process;
  • Learn how to use the ASYD Quality Standards Assessment Tool;
  • Practice observing program practices; and
  • Apply ratings to program practices.

Youth Mental Health First Aid

Youth Mental Health First Aid is designed to teach parents, family members, caregivers, teachers, school staff, peers, neighbors, health and human services workers, and other caring citizens how to help an adolescent (age 12-18) who is experiencing a mental health or addictions challenge or is in crisis. Youth Mental Health First Aid is primarily designed for adults who regularly interact with young people.

Before You Evaluate, Articulate: A Logic Model Intensive

Many programs struggle to measure and communicate results, often because it's unclear whether they are effectively following their own design, or the expected outcomes don't align with the activities of the program. This three-hour workshop will help participants design a logic model that effectively connects the program's resources and activities with measurable outcomes. We will start with a basic overview of the difference between process evaluation and outcome evaluation, leading into how a thoughtful, well-designed logic model supports both kinds of evaluation. The session includes active time for ideation, group feedback and discussion, and initial drafting of real-life logic models. In order to fully participate, participants should bring a laptop computer and any current logic models in use by their organizations. However, a current logic model is not a pre-requisite; we will give you templates to start from scratch!

Beyond the Feedback Survey: Strengthen Your Impact with Youth-Adult Partnership

We all know that “youth voice” in afterschool and mentoring programs is a quality standard – and means more than an activity choice or feedback survey, but how (and why) do we meaningfully center the voices of the very young people we aim to impact? In this session co-designed with youth, you’ll hear directly from young people who grew up in youth-driven afterschool programs and now help strengthen the organizations and systems that aim to impact youth. Get ready to experience – and have tons of fun with – key strategies required for effective youth voice, and do some action planning to take home for transformation!
